CHAPTER 12

AND NOW THE FUN PART

George Knudson was a great Canadian ball striker who, like Moe Norman, was one of the few golfers whom Ben Hogan would watch, and George studied Hogan keenly. In 1969, Knudson went to extra holes in the Masters, losing to the great putter George Archer. Jack Nicklaus has been quoted as saying that Knudson was “a guy with a million-dollar golf swing and a ten-cent putting stroke.” But despite this weakness, Knudson won eight PGA Tour events, the same number as Mike Weir to date. Like Hogan, Knudson got so much fun out of the action of moving the hands into the ball that he became addicted to practice.

In the summer of 1969, I watched George Knudson hitting balls at Point Grey golf course in Vancouver for the CPGA championships. He was the last one out on the range when I got up enough nerve to ask him a question that was torturing me: “What brings the hands down to the impact zone?”

Knudson’s answer was short: “Just move the left knee, like this,” he said with a demonstration. “Got it from Hogan. Can’t wait to get on my big toe and give that ball a whack.”
